Very quickly after Microsoft unveiled Windows 8 and the ability to support the ARM architecture at the conference D9. Then at Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced the latest named OMAP4470 processor, designed for Android, Linux and Windows 8. TI OMAP4470 takes on not only traditional TI rivals like NVIDIA’s Tegra and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon on mobile devices, but with support for Windows 8, it also overlapped the market notebooks ultraportables, where AMD and Intel are holding most market section.
The OMAP4470 follows in the footsteps of the existing OMAP4430, the 1GHz dual-core found in the BlackBerry PlayBook, and the dual-core 1.5GHz OMAP4460 currently with developers and expected to show up in commercial products in the second half of 2011. It brings with it the POWERVR SGX544 GFX graphics core running at 384MHz with support for DirectX 9, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG 1.1 and OpenCL 1.1, good for driving a display of up to QXGA 2048 x 1536 resolution or three simultaneous HD screens.
With integrated Cortex A9 dual-core, Web browsing performance of OMAP4470 up to 80% while the ARM Cortex M3 is optimized to save power and quick response. The result is that mobile devices can use the OMAP4470 Full-HD video games 10 hours straight or Full-HD video within 4 hours.
TI OMAP4470 will start being tested by partners from the second half of 2011 and went into commercial production from the first half of 2012. Next generation of OMAP4 is OMAP5 with ARM Cortex-A15 MPCores core running at up to 2GHz will appear on the market since the second half of 2012.
